While the need for this capability might be less pressing for the average engineer, producer, or studio owner, we may still benefit from having the tools to make some basic measurements.įuzzMeasure 4 allows us to measure and compare basic attributes like frequency response, group delay, and harmonic distortion, as well as a few more esoteric metrics with which I am less familiar - nineteen parameters in all. The tangential mounting of the arm board is frustrating. For acousticians and those engaged in research and development, the ability to measure attributes of rooms, speaker systems, and audio circuits is obviously invaluable. I don't think I could get it set to Lofgren (b). One thing I have found with the setup is I have to have to tone arm almost all the way forward in the arm board to get it set to the Baerwald alignment on the Fieckert protractor. All this was precipitated by my daughter (two now, not then) trashing the old cartridge when the baby sitter (grandma) wasn't looking, then, shortly after, I was given a couple of thousand LPs of classical music so that was a bit of a kick up the bum to get it all going as well as reasonable.

It all sounds pretty good, however I changed so much at once that its impossible to quantify which of the mods had the most or little impact. Oh, I also replaced the arm board with the alloy one from sound supports (for what I admit are mostly aesthetic reasons). Sooner or later a relatve, and gifted cabinet maker, will make a new console for the TT out of red gum. I did damp the chassis with dynamat, polish the platter axle and bearing, rewire the tone arm, and replace the bottom with thick ply and adjustable feet to level the unit. I read about the bronze knife edge, and what I read was rather mixed, so I haven't gone down that route.

I would still be really interested to play with a record that has left and right only cuts of pink, or band limited pink noise.Ĭan someone reccomend some good o-scope software for OS X that doesnt require proprietary hardware? I have played with the faber acoustical software in the past and had a look again this week, but it seems so unstable on my machine (lots of spinning beach balls) that I have no interest in buying it or trying to use it to you know, do a job. Especially ones with multiple inputs, where surely each cartridge would dictate a slightly different setting.

I am wondering why very few external phono preamps have such balance controls. If you need to correct the balance, the preamp or amp is the place to do it (better yet, buy a cartridge that has a near perfect channel balance). What I wanted to say was that azimuth adjustment is not the proper way to correct it. Little misunderstanding here, I didn’t mean to state that channel balance is not important. Outside of a science lab, there is no listening system set to tolerances of better than 0.5mm (including, importantly listener location) so if the error doesn't have a ready fix, I'm not likely to invest much energy into something to will be 'out of phase' a mm either side. Hence my comment much earlier in the thread the phase error was about 0.5mm. One point of reference I find very useful, when deciding if to worry about a phase error, difference, what have you, between speakers, is to figure out the physical distance you would have to travel to find the same error. But the sound has not changed, just the spot of air you're measuring. Bump a measurement mic, slightly, when measuring relative phase between speakers and the phase graph that was looking pretty good will now look far worse that the graphs I posted here. Phase errors, deviations, what have you are always very easy to find in the VHF region. It's even more likely that you start to measure tip imperfections instead of azimuth errors. And thus phase measurement will become more difficult. One more thing, when we look at the tip size and groove excitation, the higher the frequency that is cut, the larger the tip becomes in comparison.
